Hazel Dickens: In Memoriam

Sing, sweet bird,

sing to us your aching melodies

about this land called West Virginia.

Now you are home, snug beneath

the hills you loved so well.

We will strain to hear your voice,

singing in these mountain winds,

echoing through the hollows,

sighing in the trees.

You were our bird, Hazel, and now

you are truly

free to fly.
