If I Had Known

If I had known

That you would leave so soon

Would I have held you tighter?

Looked into your eyes more deeply?

Clutched your hand harder?

If I had known

Would I have spoken different words?

Listened to your voice more carefully?

Would I have pulled you to me,

Stroked your hair and lulled you into staying?

Would I? Would I,

Or would I have stood aside

Believing  that you knew your path

Though I yearned to hold you

For a minute, an hour, a day longer?

If I had known

Would it have made a difference

To the ending of your story?
