Hope of Spring

The moon rides in a crystal sky

At the quarter and yet

Its shadowy underside

Is clear to naked eye

Ice-crisp air snaps on skin bared

For an instant to its touch

Hair in nostrils freezes

To shatter with each breath

It is March and winter holds its grip

Yet the defiant daffodils

thrust their sturdy spikes

through the sleeping earth
