Hazel Dickens: In Memoriam

NaPoWriMo Day 3: write a poem in the form of a fan letter to a celebrity

April 22, 2011 :

Sing, sweet bird, your aching melodies

about this land called West Virginia.

Now you are home, snug beneath

the hills you loved so well

and we will strain to hear your voice,

singing in the mountain winds,

echoing through the hollows,

sighing in the trees.

You were our bird, Hazel, and now

you are truly

free to fly.
