Ice Storm, 2003

Today’s storm, that started with frozen rain yesterday, reminded me of the terrible ice storm of 2003, when hundreds of trees literally burst apart and there were limbs and trunks littering the woods, fields and roads. It was an unforgettable experience, which I have tried to capture with these few words.

Blue moonlight, eerie,
glittering on ice-crusted trees,
the quiet as deep as the snow until
POP POP POP
With a shock that sounds like shotgun blasts
trees explode, even the mighty oaks
splitting, cracking, crashing to the ground.

Silence returns,
broken only by the crystal tinkle
of shattered, scattering ice.
